CONDUCTOR

Matthew is a freelance conductor based in Manchester working across the UK specialising in choral conducting and education, he is sought after for his energetic and engaging style and has worked with choirs and singers for the Hallé, Opera North, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic as well as many choral societies and community choirs.

He is currently in post as the Choral Director at the University of Liverpool where he directs the University's auditioned Chamber Choir as well as the music department's Vocal Group and Staff Choir.


Matthew is the founder and musical director of Manchester Vocal Ensemble, a vocal group specialising in performance and recordings of modern choral repertoire and cross-genre collaborations.


With the Hallé, Matthew currently holds the position as Assistant Director of the Hallé Youth Choir, preparing the choirs for a UK summer tour and their season at the Bridgewater Hall. He has also worked with the Hallé Community Choir since 2016/17 and has previously worked with the Hallé Children’s Choir. In November 2019, Matthew took part as a conductor in the Hallé’s corporate choir competition with his newly formed BDO Choir and was successful in leading them to 1st place and overall winners of the competition.


Since 2016, Matthew has been heavily involved as a choral conductor at Opera North working with the Opera North Youth Company, this role has seen Matthew prepare the chorus for many concerts including the world premiere of Will Todd's Micro Opera 'Songs of Love and Battle' under the baton of Richard Farnes.


Matthew was engaged in 2018 as a chorus master for the men's community chorus in Opera North's UK premiere of Kevin Putz' opera 'Silent Night' winner of the 2012 Pulitzer Music Prize.


As chorus master, Matthew has prepared Bolton Choral Society for their performances of Gershwin's Porgy and Bess in 2017 and Walton's Belshazzar's Feast in 2018 in collaboration with Bolton Symphony Orchestra.


In 2015, Matthew began his conductor training when he was awarded the Young Conductor's Scholarship with Sing For Pleasure. It was here that he was able to study with some of the country's most experienced conductors and vocal leaders including Manvinder Rattan and Sarah Tennant-Flowers. Matthew continued his tuition with SFP, completing his final advanced conducting course in the summer of 2017.
