ABOUT MATTHEW

Matthew is a Manchester based freelance conductor, educator and workshop leader working across the UK. Sought after for his energetic and engaging style he has been engaged to work with choirs and singers for some of the country’s finest music organisations including the Hallé, Opera North, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Voices Foundation and SFP.

As a conductor, Matthew regularly works with many choirs including Sale Youth Choirs, N-Choir and was recently covering a position as the  Choral Director at the University of Liverpool. He is also the founder and musical director of Manchester Vocal Ensemble, a vocal group specialising in modern choral repertoire and cross-genre collaborations.

Matthew currently holds the position as Assistant Director of the Hallé Youth Choir and has worked with many outstanding youth music organisations including the Hallé Children’s Choir and the Opera North Youth Ensembles. 

A specialist in music education and accessibility, Matthew has led the choral activity on Opera North's award winning In Harmony programme as well as working closely with The Voices Foundation as a choral expert, training music leaders across the UK.

He is passionate about accessibility in music and theatre and leads many community based projects for Opera North and the Hallé with a diverse range of groups.

Matthew is an experienced workshop leader and has devised and delivered a multitude of workshops for choirs, workplace choirs, theatre and opera companies as well as facilitating large scale singing events.

In November 2019, Matthew’s ‘BDO Choir’ claimed first place and were overall winners of the Hallé Corporate Choir Competition.
